The stamp designed by Terrence W. McCaffrey of the U.S. Postal Service®, Washington, DC, also goes on sale nationwide April 8, 2006. The stamp features two of the most recognized symbols of the United States: the Statue of Liberty and the American flag. Carl and Ann Purcell of Alexandria, Virginia, took separate photographs of the Statue of Liberty and the American flag and combined them to create the montage used in the stamp art.
