When rotary plate booklet sheets are cut into individual panes, the plate numbers are removed, but miscut or widely cut panes show part of the plate or even the full plate number, depending on the width of the margin containing the numerals. The full numbers are almost always upper/lower left positions, miscut or wider cuts showing the upper/lower right positions are considerably scarcer and usually show only a small percentage of the plate number.

Booklet pane positions on 400-subject plates
The 400 subject sheet is divided into an upper and a lower half by the process marks, the upper half panes being designated Type I and the lower half Type II. In the normal cutting operation, the sheet is divided into 10 panes with horizontal register dashes (panes 1,6,11,..), 10 panes with vertical register dashes (panes 4,9,14,..) and 30 panes without selvage marks. The plate numbers, process marks and joint lines are usually trimmed off, these marks may only appear if the sheet is sufficiently miscut (this also applies to the 320 and 360 subject plates, which usually show no selvage marks at all). The horizontal Electric eye bars move slightly lower relative to those of the pane just above, and the lower half of the sheet is an exact duplicate of the upper part. The vertical Electric eye dashes type I and II differ markedly in position. Type I panes have a long dash at the right (upper) edge, while Type II panes have the long dash at the left (bottom) edge of the selvage.
