Official Announcement | The
Postal Service will issue the 23-cent (2nd oz) George Washington (Item 102900) definitive
stamp in three new formats, a water-activated gum (WAG) pane of 100 (Item 102900), a
pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) convertible book of 10 (Item 671000), and a (PSA)
vending booklet of 10 (Item 671800) on June 7, 2002, Washington, DC. The WAG pane of 100
will be available for nationwide sale on June 7, 2002. The PSA convertible book of
10 and PSA vending booklet of 10 will be available at a later date. The stamp, designed and illustrated by Richard Sheaff, Scottsdale, Arizona, was first issued on September 20, 2001, in Washington, DC, and available only in a PSA pane of 20 and a PSA coil of 100. Item 772000, 23-cent George Washington PSA coil of 100, previously manufactured by Banknote Corporation of America, is now being manufactured by Avery Dennison. |
Varieties | This vending booklet has been found with different horizontal die cuts. Booklets can have either 11.2 die cuts in both columns, or 10.5 and 11.2 in either the left or right column. No booklets have been found with 10.5 in both columns. The vertical die cuts are all 11.2. |
Note | Vending booklets are
shipped to post offices packed in two different configurations. Offices with Multi-Commodity Vending Machines receive their booklets packed in a box with 2 rows totaling 450 booklets. Offices with dedicated booklet vending machines receive the criss-cross style booklets, packed 300 to a box. Each booklet in the stack is turned 90° from the one above or below. There is no physical difference in the appearance of the booklets. |
Differences between the Convertible book and the Vending book. | The stamp side of the
vending and convertible booklets show minor differences. The peel off strip has been removed from the vending book and many books have a cutting nick at the die cut fold line, either left or right. On the cover side, the URL is 671000 on the convertible booklet and 671800 on the vending booklet. The vending booklet has been sealed with a transparent round tab. The stamps appear to be identical on both formats. |
Note | Vending booklets with P4 were found the first week of April, 2003. |
